How we help: information

People don’t plan to become a victim or witness of crime. It usually happens ‘out of the blue’ and then, suddenly, things can start to happen that can make you feel like your life is out of control. The police might get involved. You could get asked to go to court. You might need medical help. You could be asked to fill in forms and sign bits of paper without really knowing what they are. And all this happens at a time when you are probably feeling upset, confused, hurt or angry.

Although lots of us see the police, courts and other parts of the criminal justice system in action on TV and in films, real life can be quite different. Many victims and witnesses find the system complicated and confusing.

We can give you information to help you make sense of the system. We can explain what all the different agencies do and how to deal with them. We can help you with form filling and with making complaints. And if you’re asked to make choices by criminal justice officials, we can help make sure you have all the information you need to make the right choice.

All of this can really help you get your life back under control after a crime.

Information for witnesses too

Courts are unfamiliar places for most of us. They can also be intimidating. Our Witness Service can help you before the trial by giving you the opportunity to have a look round an empty courtroom so that you know what to expect. We can also explain to you what will happen on the day and who you'll have to deal with. We can't stand in the witness box for you or tell you what to say - but we can give you the information you need to give your evidence with confidence.
