Anti-social behaviour project in Birmingham
Birmingham City Council commissioned Victim Support to develop a bespoke service to help and support local victims and witnesses of ASB right across the city.
This project was set up in 2007 and is made up of a team of project officers who give tailored support to victims and witnesses. They support victims who have experienced a range of ASB including noise nuisance, intimidation, harassment, and racial and homophobic abuse.
How it works
The service takes referrals from the council’s ASB unit and housing department and contacts victims within 48 hours of receiving the referral. They discuss the nature of the ASB and give support and advice where necessary.
They often signpost and refer people to other services. The team also offers our ‘Visual evidence for victims’ service if appropriate, where team members take photographs as evidence to support a case that may end up in court.
Project officers can also accompany victims and witnesses on pre-trial visits to court, including civil court, and can help with the arrangements for ‘special measures’ in court to reduce the fear of giving evidence.
Positive feedback on the project
From Dave Clifton, Senior Project Officer, Birmingham City Council: “This has become an essential service, giving ASB victims the support and reassurance they need. It takes the pressure off our enforcement officers who are focused on stopping the behaviour by dealing with perpetrators.”
From a client: “The service is fantastic and very helpful. The staff are respectful and always professional. Keep up the great work you all do – we need this service. I thank you with all my heart.”
