Being a volunteer

We welcome volunteers from every community

Volunteers are extremely important to the support that we give to victims and witnesses. Volunteers outnumber staff in our charity by about four to one, so clearly they are essential to our work.

As a volunteer you could help in one of three ways:

1. Working with victims in your community

We'll train you to support victims from the first time you meet them until they feel strong enough to move forward on their own. You'll listen to their concerns and needs and potentially co-ordinate with other agencies to make sure that their needs are met.

2. Supporting witnesses at court

Going to court can be a daunting and scary experience. We'll train you to deal, sensitively, with both defence and prosecution witnesses to be able to provide a friendly face, support and information during a trial.

3. Working on the Victim Supportline

Based in London, our Supportline takes calls from victims, witnesses and other people affected by crime. You'll be trained to handle all types of call, from simple enquiries to giving emotional support on sensitive issues.

We can also train you to give very specific support to more vulnerable members of the community, such as helping young witnesses at court.

Volunteers help in lots of other ways too, with our IT systems, with administration, or in fundraising for example.

Who can volunteer?

You don’t need qualifications or previous experience of this kind of work to volunteer for Victim Support. All you need is a willingness to help and a little time. We'll do the rest.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We welcome volunteers from every walk of life and from every community. This helps us reach out to people in need, whatever their circumstances. That’s why we have policies in place to make sure we attract the best staff and volunteers from all communities. Find out more about our equality, diversity and inclusion policy.
